Information on
items placed on Consignment
What a person should know about the different methods in
selling one item or a collection.
1. Sell the items yourself:
If you are able to find the end buyer you may get the most funds for your
collection. It is important that you do your research as to find the correct
value [for dolls Jan Faulk Blue Book, etc.] and then the best place to advertise.
Your cost may be limited only to the advertising fee.
2. Auction: It is the one
method of disposing of a collection in a hurry. If you take cash up front you
will most likely receive the least amount of funds. It can take up to a year or
longer before they are put into an auction. The cost can be up to 25% plus cost
to promote the auction. This will vary from auction to auction so one must have
a clear understanding what the fee is if any. Also is the items insured while
waiting for auction and who pay the insurance [most generally the seller]. Most generally you will receive
what ever buyers are willing to pay that day. Some time you will be allowed to
place a reserve on the items [from my experience it is recommended].
3. E-bay: Again you must
have a good idea of value and be sure to place a reserve close to the market
value or start your biding for what you are willing to take. Other words what
ever someone is willing to pay at the moment, is what you will get. The fee will
be determined by how you place your item on E-bay plus a fee when it sells. You
will most likely need to set up a PayPal account in order to collect your
money [which also has a fee]. You can accept only checks or money orders.
4. Sell direct to a Dealer:
A dealer will not pay retail. They also have the expenses of marketing such as
trade shows, web site on the internet, and various other advertising expenses.
5. Place items on consignment:
It is important that you have complete understanding with the dealer how/when you
will be paid when the items sell. How long you are willing to place on
consignment. Have a written list of what is on consignment and expected values.
How much you will be charged for at the time it is sold. How is the item going
to be protected when not in your possession [such as placed in a vault], how
will it be insured against breakage and theft.
Yes, Hers & Mine Antiques, purchase one item or collection. We also take
